Melbourne Main Sewer Replacement

    This project involved the replacement of approximately 2.23km of sewer main from Docklands, in Melbourne, crossing the Yarra River upstream of the Charles Grimes Bridge and continuing into Port Melbourne.

    Project Details

    The TBM chosen was a Lovat mixed ground EPB with an OD of 2.8 metres and an ID of 2.4 meters, a length of 103 metres, weighing 164 tonnes and a combined thrust of 825 tonnes.

    The TBM was named “Lucy Loo” by Port Mrelbourne school children and excavated more than 15,000 cubic metres of spoil.

    Outcomes

    Work began in late August 2008 and was completed in on time in July 2012. The project cost $206 million – $14 million under budget.
