Narrows Marine Crossing

    The Narrows Marine Crossing near Gladstone is a 4.3km tunnel connecting the mainland near Gladstone to Curtis Island.

    Project Details

    The tunnel will house Santo’s LNG gas transmission pipeline and is costed at $134 million.

    The Herrenknecht EPB TBM has a diameter of four meters, is 99m long and weighs over 300 tonnes.

    Refurbished after use on the Northern Sewerage Project in Melbourne it has been re-christened Rose-Ella by local school children.

    Outcomes

    The TBM began tunneling in April 2013 and completed the tunnel in February 2014. During this project xtensive hyperbaric welding was required on the cutter head.
