Port of Miami

The Port of Miami Tunnel is a major construction project in Miami, Florida, with an estimated cost of 1 billion US dollars. Constructior Bouygues Civil Works commenced work is October 2011 and is expected to take four years, linking MacArthur Causeway to Dodge Island.

    Project Details

A Herrenknecht EPB TBM with a diameter of 13.1m, 380ft long and weighing over 2500 tonnes will construct two road tunnels, each 1.2km in length, about 36m below the surface.
The project sees the introduction of controlled water pressure (CWP) while boring through porous coral. During this phase of tunnelling commercial divers, using full diving equipment, were used inside the excavation chamber to change excavation tools.

    Outcomes

The Port of Miami Project represents the continued innovation in tunnel boring with Pressureworx working with the project’s management to ensure all personnel were successfully trained to the highest standards to meet the demands of such cutting-edge projects.
